Sight

Sight

The sunlight
Peaking
Over the mountain
Of the east
Filters through the trees
And some leaves
Shine
Like facets of diamonds.
I
Peer
Intensely closer
To see
Dark veins,
Backlit,
Embedded
In translucent forest green,
Thin, ovals.
A fresh breeze
Gently stirs.

Preference

Preference

Ego breeds
Arrogance,
Contempt,
And
Dismissal.
These things
Run rampant
Today,
It seems.
I prefer
Civility,
Compassion,
And
Love.

Golden Ratio

Golden Ratio

Wind gusts push cold snow
Across the ridge, settling
As a drift of pi.

Kicking In

Kicking In

By Terry Roice

November 15, 2014

Learning is not learning

Until it kicks in.

Like times tables memorized,

Not really knowing what they mean

Before that “aha” moment

When their truth and their beauty

Can be clearly seen.

And with that understanding

Comes utility and respect.

Like an adage that I had heard

Occasionally over some years,

“A rolling stone gathers no moss.”

Okay, I would think. I see that. So what?

And on my way I’d go.

No, never another thought

Until one day I found myself

Caught firmly in that spot

When I noticed those around me

Caught in a rut of living,

Doing the same thing over and over

And calling that a life.

So, I chose to move along

In search of something more

To stretch my mind wider open

To wonders of the world, of being,

And let experiences grow

To bloom as though I were a rose

Unfolded to the rain and sun.

Imminent

Imminent

I looked at the sky

Seeing black clouds holding back

Torrents for their storm.

Flower Power

Flower Power

Smooth, softly tender

Pale peach petals inviting

Butterflies and awe.

Fractal

Fractal

Our rate of knowing

Is out of control,

Escalating speed

Pushing exponentially,

Deeper,

Wider,

Denser,

Pursuing connections

And finding them,

Forging fresh developments

To old ideas

Leading to

New uses,

New understandings,

New possibilities,

New complexities,

New mysteries,

New challenges,

That soon turn old,

All the while

Dissipating our humanity

In our excitement

Like the expanding universe

Casting its particles

Outward

Into dark space.

Communion

Communion

Life sustaining clear

Moisture in a droplet rolls

Down crimson velvet,

A delicate rose petal,

To sweeten my lips, a kiss.

Query

“Climate change is a fraud

And global warming isn’t real,”

Some people say

In defense of a perceived attack

On their lifestyle

And on their politics.

Perhaps,

They are wrong

Or

Perhaps,

They are right.

Who knows?

Yet, even if what these folks say

Is true,

I have to ask the question,

“Why would we tolerate

Deforestation,

Oil spills,

Air pollution,

And contaminated water

Anywhere

For any reason?

Ennui

Ennui

Chilly, drizzling rain

Dampens mood, dims thought dull gray,

While monotony

Casts its foul, heavy pallor,

Smothering inspiration.
